Fun with Flowers

As I am progressing with my art journaling class (Your Living Canvas) through Scarlet Lime (link on side), I find myself getting a little carried away with all of the layers.  I can't help it.  I tell myself that I am going to keep it light and then something like this happens.
I used my Canon Rebel T3 for the pics outside on a sunny day.  I used a different lens because I wanted to get closer to some of the elements.  I used Pic Monkey for my edits.  It is a cool photo editing service by the same dudes who did Picnik.  They are still pretty basic, but that's okay.  I'm sure that they will add more features as they progress.  They have added a cool collage feature already.   And it's free!  I am all for free.

I wanted to do something different for the flowers.  When I happened to look up while I was in the Batcave, I saw these beads on string high up on a shelf that I had purchased for a different project.  I wrapped them in a spiral pattern and hot glued them to the page.  Then they needed something so I made centers out of clay, baked them and hot glued them.  I think the flowers are cool.

The orange flower is modeling paste over a dot circles stencil that I am sure I purchased through Scarlet Lime.  Sorry, but I don't remember the name of the stencil.

Okay, this is weird, but I was looking in my fabric box for something to use for the stems.  I saw these jeans pieces.  I had some jeans altered and they gave me back the fabric that they had removed.  Surely I could use that in my art!  I did.  I think that is what I am most proud of, quite frankly.  The stem is with the right side facing up and the leaves are with the right side facing down.

The clay was left over from another canvas that I did and it just happened to be swirled with the correct colors.  I am so glad that I hoard things sometimes.

Tragedy Revisited in a New Way

During the journaling exercise for the first week of Your Living Canvas we had to write a bit of our history and how it relates to our life now.  One of the major events that I chose to journal was a hard one, but something I needed to do.  Last February, our amazing neighbor, John, was tragically killed in a snowmobile accident not too far from the house.  He was a special guy and we all miss him dreadfully.  I can talk about that night, but I find that writing about it is more difficult.  I am guessing that it is seeing the words on paper that makes it that way.  Somehow, I got inspired to represent that night, the period after and the present in the journal.  I know that it isn't pretty, but I felt that I needed to do it.  Below are the results of my thought process.  I did show this to John's family and they really liked it.  We cried a bit, but they are the bravest people I know and they appreciated what I had created.
For those of you who are interested, I took these photos outside on a sunny day with my Canon EOS Rebel T3 and a 50mm lens.
So this is the first page.  If you read the words, you will get the gist of our involvement.  The face was done in untinted flexible modeling paste and glued on.  I did the words with a Sharpie paint pen (love it).  The flames were sculpted onto the paper with the modeling paste.  I gessoed the pages, then put black gesso over the top so that I could scratch into the layer.  That day was cold and it was nighttime.  We had just had 16 inches of snow two days before.

This is the second page.  I wrote the words "Is that a light in the distance" because it took a while to start to feel better after that night.  The butterflies were punched out of regular cardstock with a Martha Stewart punch.   I mutilated them purposely to show that we were severely damaged.   The calendars were Tim Holtz dipped in white paint.  The clock stamps were from Christy's shop.

Here is the page for the present.  I know that it is totally cliche to use the song "Here Comes the Sun" but it was perfect for this.  The butterflies and sun are made out of (drum roll, please) flexible modeling paste (did I mention it's my new fave?).  I tried to use lots of shades of colors to indicate a lightening of my soul in places.  There is still a lot of black and the family agreed that it is those unexpected black periods that throw you.  The zig zag stitch is Christy's (love it) and for me it represents my world being stitched back together a bit.  I made the flowers using the ends of a couple of paint brushes dipped in paint.  I did edge the pages in black ink and rubbed a little ink over things.

Your Living Canvas Journal is Go for Launch!

I have finally finished the cover and inside cover pages of my journal for the class I am taking through Scarlet Lime called Your Living Canvas.  I had a lot of fun doing these.  I am working on some pages and will post those when they are finished.  It has been pretty humid here so my flexible modeling paste (new fav) is taking a while to dry, therefore delaying the process a bit.  I hope that you enjoy my pics and some of the thoughts behind the process.
This is the back cover.  The flower stamp is Donna Downey.

This is the front cover.  I chose to cut my butterflies out of corrugated cardboard.

Okay, I confess.  I love the Harry Potter series.  For some reason, when I did the brick wall stencil it reminded me of Hagrid tapping the bricks for Harry to get into Diagon Alley for the first time.  I remembered the awe and amazement that Harry experienced and I kind of wanted to express that with my cover.  Honestly, that wasn't my original plan.

I went to a website to look up quotes and found this one.  I love it.

On the back, I wanted to show the brick wall kind of broken down since I have done the journaling.
This is the inside cover.

I have these alterations tags and I couldn't resist putting them in the journal since I am hoping this class will 'alter' me is some ways.

Media Free ... Almost

I am enrolled in an art journaling/self improvement class called Your Living Canvas.  We just officially started the course last week, but we have been doing 'warm up' journaling and leadership challenges all along.  One of the instructors challenged us to live "media free" for a day.  The other instructor suggested that we should all try to do May 31st.  Okey dokey.  I'm up for a challenge.  It was mostly scary for me with regards to the radio, Ipod, Kindle, Ipad and TV since those are my addictions.  Oops, looking at the list I see that is pretty much everything, isn't it?  Sigh.
I woke up around 5:30 and immediately turned on the TV in the bedroom because this is what I do every day.  Habits are hard to ignore.  I did remember about 15 minutes or so into it and turned off my TV.  I had to miss one of the Duggars getting sick, or maybe it was the bit about Kim Zolzniak's side boob, but I will do what needs to be done.  Then I went down to the basement to work out and I used the TV and a workout DVD.  That was a necessary pass for good health (in my humble opinion), but then I kept watching TV after I was done (as is my habit, again) and while I was stretching.  I came to my senses right before my last set of stretches and clicked off the set.  Well, still not too bad.  Okay, this TV thing is hard to stop,  especially considering that I have a TV in every room where I might spend more than 5 minutes of my time.  And I'm able to transport a TV into any room in an emergency or on a moment's notice.
It was raining like crazy, so after my second fail, I was able to go up to The Batcave (aka my studio) and work on my journal cover for class right away.  I was glad because this is when I usually water the garden and I always use my Ipod because I need to listen to music to drown out the sound of the hose, the birds and my neighbors in case they holler at me. So at least that was one habit I didn't automatically do by accident.
I was really progressing on my art journal cover, but I was definitely having withdrawal symptoms.  I am also not so sure that the thoughts that were in my head were at all worth having, but have them I did.  All morning.  With no interruption.  Yay.
I do have to confess here that I answered my cell once.  I had forgotten to put it on vibrate and I didn't recognize the number.  Since we are in the middle of the bathroom remodel process, I thought maybe it was them calling with some info I needed.  But, happily, it was Amanda from my favorite department store letting me know that the shoes I had ordered were in and I could come get them any time.  I was glad that I had taken that call since I really wanted those shoes.  I can put up pics of them if you want.  They are cute.  So are the other pair I bought when I went in to get those.  But those were on sale, so it's okay.  Just don't tell my husband.
The rest of today's agenda was simple, but daunting:  clean out and start the painting process of my oldest daughter, Lauren's, bedroom.  She is going to be moving back into the area at the end of the summer and I figure it will be easier to do it before she brings all of her stuff and her cat (totally another story) back home.  Now, bear in mind that when she graduated from college, she was only here for a couple of days before leaving for her summer job at a Y camp in New Jersey.  After that she moved to St. Louis, then California.  Last summer I helped her move from California to Maryland (road trip!).  In all of that time, she has never had an opportunity to come home and go through all of her important things like, say,  the Jello shot holders or beer mugs.  I have it all boxed up neatly and labeled, but it is all still there.  In great quantities.  I mean, there are things from Middle School in boxes.  She has some serious purging to do when she gets back here.  She already knows.
To help me out with this little project, I enlisted the aid of the neighbor girls.  Diann is just home from her Freshman year in college and Hannah is going to be a high school Junior.  They are completely capable of actually helping me; or doing all of the work, depending on my mood.  I was heading to get the umbrella so that I could go over and get them when the house phone rang.  It was Diann wondering when they should come over.  Since I am nobody's fool, I said, "Right now."  Okay.  So I talked on the phone, but it was important so it doesn't count.  There.
When the girls got here I was almost finished removing all traces of my daughter's existence from her bedroom.  I only put her stuff in the other room, although my thoughts were telling me that all of the boxes should go to the curb.  I said, "Thoughts, be quiet!" (much like Max tells the Wild Things to be quiet in the story) and I was able to finish moving her junk.  The overwhelming wealth of goodies totally filled up the Julie's bedroom.  Filled it.  Up.   Luckily, the neighbor girls are very strong and helpful so we got finished right away.  We cleaned the empty bedroom, taped it, filled in the holes with cool hole filler stuff and primed the areas that needed it.  I finally noticed their cell phones sitting on the window sills and my hands were starting to shake pretty badly from the effort of trying to resist the temptation to grab their phones and read whatever message was there.  Of course, that would be completely rude and very childlike.  Time for lunch.
Back to work.  Still no music.  Luckily the girls are older and can carry on an intelligent conversation.  Occasionally, they would let me participate, so all was good.  Plus, I was doing stupid things, so we had some good laughs.  I still don't know how I got paint all over my arm before we even started painting.  And I totally can't explain the paint on my back at all.  We were working on the ceiling, no walls.  Oh well.
After they left, it was still raining and I wanted to read my Kindle.  Oops.  Not allowed today.  So, I had to get a dumb magazine.  Really.  I can't believe that I needed to hold it with both hands.  I couldn't do anything but read that magazine.  I kept looking at my Ipad and I was having improper thoughts, so I went into the kitchen to fix dinner. The first thing I did, of course, was turn on the TV so that it could keep me company while I was cooking.  Damn.  That habit thing is annoying.  I told you I had a TV in all of the important rooms.
Around 8:00 my day was over.  I know this because I always lay on the couch with my Kindle or watch TV until bedtime or until I fall asleep.  Already during this first week off of school I have started falling asleep on the couch until midnight.  Then I have to wake up and go to bed.  How stupid is that?  Another habit I have to fix.  Bigger sigh.
Because my day was officially over around 8:00 it was okay for me to watch TV.  Because I had gotten through my day.  Officially.  I'm the boss, so that's the way it is.  I say so.
While my media free experiment was maybe not a complete success, it wasn't a total fail either.  I am proud that I only messed up a few times.  It was kind of fun to have conversations and think the thoughts that came into my head, strange though they were.  It was cool to hear the rain all day.  Ok, well, that got old after about a half hour, but it was kind of cool for a while.  It was fun getting stuff done without being distracted by looking up something vitally important on the computer like, say, how old is Johnny Depp.  I didn't even go on IMDB until after 8 pm when I was downloading Bramwell from Netflix and I needed to know what other shows some of the actors starred in right away .  Since I did this on the TV with my Google enabled Blu Ray DVD player and my day was already done, this didn't count.  I didn't use my Ipad all day.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

New Art Class

Hey friends.  I am going to be taking a new art class/life class from my fav, Christy Tomlinson.  Her link to her website is on the sidebar to the right.  I have been doing the pre-class exercises (not required) and they are not too bad.  I am really excited to learn new techniques, etc.  Now I only have about five classes that I am taking at the same time.  I hope to be posting some results here later.
If you are interested, go to http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fchristytomlinson.typepad.com%2Fchristytomlinson%2Fmy-living-canvas-workshop.html&h=EAQHULU7eAQGOnyJexB7CnZkYPThbZVyhP39V-xNijRrnAw
You will be able to read about the class and view some videos on what will be happening.  It is a 6 week course, but you have a year to do it.  Also, there is a closed group Facebook Page and the things that people have been sharing are amazing...and we haven't even started.
If you are interested in jump starting your creativity, you can't find a better class or group of people.  Hope to see you there!

Boys

I have been working on gifts for my 5 little guys.  The last day of school is Thursday and I will be giving each boy a canvas as a gift from me.  These are done on canvas board or panel.  I found the 4x4 at the Phoenix Art Supply when I was in ... Phoenix and I bought some.  And yes, I am that art geek who visits art stores on trips.  They are different than a stretched canvas in that there is support over the entire surface, so if you want to do a stamp, you will get a good image.  I did miss the added dimension of the sides of a stretched canvas though.
I had my patterns from last year, so these didn't take long at all.  Just mainly drying time which I used to get ready for the garage sale.  Good girl!

I put each child's initial on their canvas.  The triangles are a stencil.

The dog paw and the hand prints are stamps.

The peace sign, baseball and soccer ball are also stamps.

You would not believe how I had to practice to do boy's hair.  Lots of different colors there.

The straight black lines are from the bottom of a piece of flip flop that I put in ink.

Wind Swept Hair Girl

Here she is.  Not a very good pic, but  the best I could do in the light that I had.

I added some beads up in the corner and also in the lower corner.  Love the bird rub-on.

Here is her skirt.  Love it!

Ok.  My new favorite stencil ranked right below the chevron one.  Not sure of the name, but I know that I bought it at ScarletLime.
So I finished this girl a little bit ago and I am actually working on another one involving seed beads and glitter.  I love this girl.  I call her "Wind Swept Hair Girl" and my favorite part is her skirt and shirt.  Christy Tomlinson's She Art 2 class used clay as dimensional objects on canvas and I loved it.  The designs in her skirt are made with stamps and some other objects.  I painted in some, used ink in some and then used Faber Castel pens on other areas.  I think that she is mine.

Your Living Canvas

I am taking an online class called "Your Living Canvas" through ScarletLime (see sidebar) and there are some leadership challenges to complete (optional) before the class actually begins.  This one was rather interesting.  We were supposed to climb a tree or otherwise go up high somewhere and see the 'world' from a different perspective.  I was going to go up into the attic of our garage and sit for a bit taking pictures.  Then, I remembered a cool experience that I had in Sedona over spring break.  My sister, my niece and I had taken a Pink Jeep Tour (fun!) that was just a little 2 hour ride up into the red hills and back.  We got out of the jeep at one point and did a little hiking.  I was madly taking pictures because this Iowa girl has never seen anything like the rough beauty of Sedona.  Our guide suggested that I go out on a ledge that he showed me so that I could get some cool pics of how the ledge opposite was actually two different rocks separated by a thin slice of air.  I wandered out, sat down (awkward because of my new knee) and started shooting.  The view was so different from what I am used to here in the Heartland.  After a few pics, I got up, narrowly avoided cracking my noggin on an overhead limb and got off of the ledge.
After we got back into the jeep and started down the trail, our guide pulled over and showed us where I had been sitting.  Whoa.  If I had seen where I was going before I did it, I wouldn't have done it.  I would have been too scared.  I was completely struck by that and the parallels that it makes in our lives.  Going out on ledges isn't really as scary when you are doing it as it is when you look back to see where you have been.  How many times have we said, "I can't believe I did that?"  Whether it is starting a business, going to school, becoming who you have always wanted to be, raising children, having children, I don't think that any of us would necessarily go out on those ledges if we knew how scary it was going to be.  Sometimes, not knowing is so much easier because there is no time to think, you just act and do it and move on with things.  Remember the ledge.
This is a picture of the ledge where I eventually wound up sitting.

This is the ledge where I took the previous picture.  I thought the little gap was so cool.  Our guide showed me how to get out on the ledge I'm on so that I could sit and get some great pics.

Yup.  Way scarier looking from the trail to the ledges.  They don't look quite as sturdy as they actually were from this angle.

Pics to Come

Whew.  This has been a crazy last few weeks.  I have pics to post of my last girl and then some more from Kansas City.  I have some great news to share and some pics from Julie Anne's visit.  I promise that I will get cracking soon.  My goal is this weekend for sure.  So, stay tuned.
